Open-Weight LLMs (Llama, Mistral, Qwen, DeepSeek): Should Your Business Self-Host AI?
SoftiIntel Team · · 7 min read
the short answer
Open-weight models such as Meta's Llama, Mistral's models, Alibaba's Qwen and DeepSeek publish their model weights, so you can run them on your own servers or cloud. They offer control, data residency and potentially lower cost at scale, but you take on hosting, updates and quality tuning. For most SMEs, hosted APIs are simpler to start with. Self-hosting fits strict data requirements, very high volumes or offline needs.
Open-weight vs hosted models
- Hosted (Claude, GPT, Gemini): you call an API. The provider runs, scales and updates the model.
- Open-weight: you download the model and run it yourself, or through a hosting provider of your choice.
- Licences differ between open-weight models. Check commercial terms before building on one.
Reasons to self-host
- Data must stay within your infrastructure or country.
- Very high, steady volumes where per-token API costs add up.
- Offline or air-gapped environments.
- Fine control over model behaviour and versions.
A practical middle path
Start on a hosted API to prove the workflow and measure volume. If data rules or costs later justify it, move specific workloads to an open-weight model, keeping the rest on a hosted API. A provider-agnostic architecture makes that switch easy. See custom AI model vs API vs RAG.
